Participating in Christmas celebrations

Q: What is the ruling with regards to participating in Christmas celebrations? Is it permissible for a person to give gifts to the kuffaar on this occasion to promote his business?

A: Islam is a religion that is complete and perfect in every respect and it provides a person with guidance in all spheres of his life. Even during occasions of happiness, such as marriage, or occasions of sadness, such as divorce or death, a person is not left to himself to decide which path he should adopt and what direction he should take. Rather, Islam guides him every step of the way and teaches him how to conduct himself, both in private and when interacting with people. In essence, there is no religion that is parallel to Islam in offering direction to man and showing him the path towards success.

Allah Ta‘ala has declared in the Qur’aan Majeed:

اَلْیَوْمَ اَکْمَلْتُ لَکُمْ دِیْنَکُمْ وَاَتْمَمْتُ عَلَیْکُمْ نِعْمَتِیْ وَرَضِیْتُ لَکُمُ الْاِسْلَامَ دِیْنًا

Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and I am pleased with Islam as your religion.

In order to follow deen correctly, we are commanded to emulate the Mubaarak Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) in all facets of life. Allah Ta‘ala says,

Indeed, there is in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful example for the one who hopes in Allah Ta’ala and the Final Day.

In the Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) has commanded us to refrain from emulating the kuffaar in their celebrations, customs, culture and ways. Hence, on the occasion of Christmas, a Muslim should maintain his Islamic identity and refrain from emulating the Christians. It is not permissible for a Muslim to have a Christmas sale or give his clientele Christmas gifts. Similarly, wishing the Christians “merry Christmas” is extremely serious as one will be wishing them happiness in their kufr and shirk practices.

The jurists have written that if one participates in the celebration of the kuffaar out of respect for such days, he will become a kaafir. If one participates in their celebration without respecting and honouring their celebration, he will not become a kaafir, but on account of this action being impermissible (makrooh-e-tahreemi), he will be sinful.

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said:

من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم

The one who imitates a people will be counted among them (in the sight of Allah Ta’ala).

As believers, we believe that true respect, honour and dignity can only be attained by following the pristine, pure teachings of Islam and the Mubaarak Sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). If we seek honour and respect elsewhere, we will bring nothing but disgrace and humiliation to ourselves. Hazrat Umar (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) has emphasized:

إنا كنا أذل قوم فأعزنا الله بالإسلام فمهما نطلب العز بغير ما أعزنا الله به أذلنا الله

We were the most disgraced of people. Allah Ta’ala then gave us honour through Islam. If we ever seek honour in something besides that through which Allah Ta’ala has honoured us (Islam), Allah Ta’ala will disgrace us.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

What will be the status of money earned from the buying & selling of Valentine’s Day items?

QUESTION:

Please advise me with regards to the buying and selling of Valentine’s Day items, what will be the status of the money earned from such trade?

ANSWER:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The inception and history of Valentine’s Day is vague and clouded by various fanciful legends.

However, there is reference of Valentines having its roots in Christianity and celebrating the anniversary of Valentine, the priest.

Today, Valentine is known to be a day of love and romance and more so a commercially driven holiday. Valentine promotes promiscuity and immoral behavior which is in clear opposition to the teachings of Islam. Allah Ta’ala says,

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الزِّنَا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ فَاحِشَةً وَسَاءَ سَبِيلًا {32}

“Abstain totally from zina (fornication), for it is immoral and an evil way.” (Quran 17:32)

As Muslims, we should completely disassociate ourselves from such un-Islamic events and holidays – whether it be directly participating in its activities or helping promote the holiday by purchasing items with symbols of the occasion.

The purchasing and selling of items with symbols of such holidays should not be viewed independently.

Items sold in relation to Valentine’s Day may be classified in three categories;

1) Those that do not have any relation to Valentine. However, the store marks the prices down due to the holiday season. The purchase and sale of such items will be permissible.

2) Those items which are exclusive to Valentine’s Day, for example, Valentine’s Day cards. The purchase and sale of such items will be impermissible.

3) Those items which are generally permissible to buy and sell, such as chocolates and flowers, but they have symbols of Valentine.

It is Makrooh (resented) to purchase and sell such items.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best.

KUFFAAR CELEBRATIONS – THE NEGATION OF IMAAN

KUFFAAR CELEBRATIONS – THE NEGATION OF IMAAN

A Brother from the U.S. laments:

Assalamu’alaykum

“Muslims” Participating in Christmas Activities
I’m not sure if you’re aware, but a significant majority of “Muslims” in England & America have engaged in one form or another in the kuffar Christmas celebrations.

They either attended a work Christmas party, wished someone a “Merry Christmas”, or under their fallacious understanding of good character they wished someone “season’s greetings” thinking they were deceiving Allah Ta’ala with a play on words. Some posed in front of a Christmas Tree & others wore a Santa hat, looking like circus clowns in the process.

Hereunder are the numerous excuses that I have heard they hope to present in the Court of Allah Ta’ala for participating in a celebration which, despite it’s commercial flavour, in essence, is one in which the ascription of a partner to Allah is celebrated.

(A) Some argue that under the auspices of good Islamic character, there is no harm in participating in the peripheral activities of Christmas as at heart we don’t believe in it.

They forget that intentionally participating in an action is sufficient for apostasy, regardless of what is in the heart. In Qur’an, I vaguely recall the group of people who said they were only joking, i.e. in their heart they didn’t mean it, yet Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam still referred to their joking on a sensitive issue as kufr.

It’s as if, na’oodhoobillah, these so-called Muslims envisage that if Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam & his beloved companions were alive today they would be as desensitised to Imaan as these morons who today proclaim to be Muslims, but unashamedly have zero fear of Allah Ta’ala and are completely oblivious to the fact that the crime of shirk is the gravest of all.

They have a warped secular understanding of good character and adopt their subjective definition as the Islamic one, yet they don’t realise that Akhlaq is a specific branch of Deen covered by numerous Ahadith and Qur’anic verses, none of which advocate the aforementioned behaviour.

In fact such behaviour is condemned in Hadith, wherein states to the nearest effect that whoever imitates them in the salient features of their beliefs/religion he/she is ONE OF THEM. Imagine being raised as ONE OF THEM on the Day of Judgement.

(B) Others trivialise the issue by proclaiming: “It’s only a bit of fun,” as if to say Islam has not defined the boundaries of play/enjoyment.

(C) Others out of fear of the kuffar denigrating or looking down on them participate out of compulsion, because they do not have the Imaani backbone, nor the fear of Allah. They fear a kaafir who is physically and spiritually impure over Allah Ta’ala who is pure and the King of all Kings. Should anybody condemn this behaviour, these satanists will refer to them as killjoys or too strict.

What I would like to know from The Majlis specifically is:
(A) Am I right in thinking that none of the aforementioned excuses for implied endorsement of shirk will be acceptable to Allah Ta’ala on the Day of Judgement?

(B) What is the state of Imaan of a person who did any of the above?

(C) If this amounts to kufr, presumably these people all have to re-enter the fold of Islam, make tauba, renew their nikah & re-perform their fardh Hajj. Is this correct?

Would you please publish the answer to this on the website as this issue is one that many Muslims are falling foul of.

(End of the Brother’s very justified complaint and \lament)
THE COMMENT OF THE SHARIAH

Brother, we are living in the era termed Aakhiruz Zamaan (The End of Earthly Time). It is in this age that the Signs of Qiyaamah predicted by Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) are incrementally and swiftly materializing. The adoption of kuffaar customs and participating in their functions are the effects of the desensitization and even of the elimination of Imaan from the hearts of professed Muslims. The curse of kuffaar emulation has reached the degree termed by Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) as “the lizard’s hole”. That is, Muslims will insanely emulate and follow the Yahood and Nasaara in every aspect of filth, fisq, fujoor and kufr to the extent of worshipping the cross inside the Musjid.

The vilest villains promoting this lizard-hole culture of emulation are the moron molvis and sheikhs of this age. These agents of Iblees have opened wide avenues of fisq and fujoor with their haraam distorted and utterly baseless interpretations on the basis of which they halaalize almost every Prohibition of the Shariah. With untenable nonsensical arguments they issue zigzag fatwas of corruption to corrupt the Imaan and ruin the Akhlaaq of the ignorant masses who find it pleasurable to dance to the tune of the haraam zigzag fatwas since the nafs derives considerable pleasure from the fatwas of the agents of shaitaan.

While it is imperative for the Ulama-e-Haqq to uphold the Command of Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahyi Anil Munkar, we do understand that the raging tide and flood of fisq and fujoor in the Ummah will not be stemmed. Nevertheless, it is Waajib for those of the Haqq to proclaim loudly and vigorously the Haqq regardless of who accepts or rejects.

The answers to your queries are as follows:

(A) Your thinking is, Alhamdulillah, 100% correct. The plethora of excuses which the followers of the Yahood and Nasaara present to justify their participation in flagrantly haraam functions and practices is nugatory of Imaan. The crashing of Allah’s Athaab on Muslims all over the world should, therefore come as no surprise.

“Muslims” of this age, despite professing to be Muslims, are no longer Muslims in terms of the Shariah. The Ummah at large has reneged from Islam with beliefs and practices of the kuffaar, hence Allah’s Chastisement is hemming them into the cauldron of misery and destruction. The Ummah as a whole has traversed the boundary of no return, hence Allah Ta’ala is severely punishing the professed muslims with the variety of misery, brutality and oppression at the hands of the very kuffaar whom they are madly emulating right into the ‘lizard’s hole’.
(B) The Imaan of people who indulge in these kinds of practices of the kuffaar is negated.

(C) Yes, you are correct in your understanding. They have to rededicate themselves to Islam. If they fail, they will be resurrected on the Day of Qiyaamah with the kuffaar whom they had so lovingly emulated here on earth. May Allah Ta’ala save us from that terrible fate.

A fearful episode

In India, once on the occasion of the Hindu festival of holi when the cow-worshippers and cow-urine-drinkers quirt colourful water and coloured cow urine on all and sundry, a Maulana while chewing paan (beetle leaf) passed by a donkey. Mockingly, he said to the donkey: Today, everyone is in happiness squirting coloured water on all. But no one is bothered about you. Any how I shall do so. So saying, he spat his red-coloured saliva on the donkey in imitation of the Hindu mushrikeen. This was obviously a joke to amuse himself.

After the demise of this Maulana Saheb, a friend saw in a dream the Maulana Sahib burning in Jahannam. In shock and surprise, he enquired of the reason for the punishment. The Maulana Sahib said that since he had emulated the holi custom of the Hindu mushrikeen, Allah’s Wrath overtook him. The abhorrence of emulating the ways and practices of the Hindu kuffaar had secured for himself the fate of Jahannam.

This episode should be a fearful lesson for those who have seceded their brains to the kuffaar. Those who adopt the customs and practices of the kuffaar should ponder and understand the far reaching disastrous consequences which will extend right into Qiyaamah. The stupid arguments and the zigzag fatwas of the moron molvis, sheiks and muftis of this age will not avail on the Day of Qiyaamah. Allah Ta’ala has endowed all Muslims with adequate intelligence for differentiation between Haqq and baatil – truth and falsehood. There will, therefore be no valid argument on the Day of Qiyaamah for justifying the kufr participation in kuffaar customs, practices and festivals.

“Derive lesson, O People of Intelligence!” (Qur’aan)

Holidays

uswatulmuslimah.co.za

The word ‘holiday’ comes from the Anglo Saxon halig daeg, or holy day. However, holidays to a great extent have become anything but holy. A Christian once observed that in their most auspicious month, December (holiday time), the most amount of crime and evil is committed. Contrary to this, in the most blessed month of the Muslims, Ramadhaan, the most amount of good takes place. Nevertheless, let alone those who are lax at all times, even those who are conscious of deen seem to ‘relax’ with regards to deen also while on holiday. The salaahs that were punctually performed while at home are now missed. The shameless attire that was never adopted at home is now adopted. Such places are visited, together with the entire family, where no Mu’min should dare to go near. All this in the name of ‘holiday’.

It should be understood that any activity which does not transgress the bounds of sharee‘ah would be permissible. Hence if one’s holiday does not involve any violation of the commands of Allah Ta‘ala, there will be no harm in it. However the intention of a true believer is never merely to ‘pass the time’. Thus the holiday should be something which refreshes and revives one’s spirit for the service of deen.

SPECTATORS

Nevertheless, it is indeed extremely sad to notice Muslims imitating the Kuffaar in their manner of holidaying. Let alone imitating them, many Muslims actually join them in their activities. For instance, many Muslims join the Kuffaar hordes in the city centers especially on the 25th and the last day of December. There are those who then remain as spectators and others actively participate. As for the spectators, they should take note of the following hadeeth: “Whosoever adds to the numbers of a people, he is from among them.” (Al-Maqaasidul Hasanah pg. 498) Thus it is clearly understood that merely being present also renders one as being part of those who are involved in the evil. Those who participate can gauge from the above just how much more serious their action is.

HOTELS

As for those who holiday at hotels which are gambling and vice dens, they innocently protest: “We do not gamble at all!” Such people should take heed of the famous advice “Refrain from places which cast a doubt upon oneself.” No person goes to a bar merely to buy a halaal soft drink. By merely entering such a place, one is bound to be affected by its environment. Hence hotels which house casinos, etc. should never be visited.

On the subject of hotels, some people are fond of spending a few days at hotels (at times just a few kilometers from their homes) ‘for a holiday’. It is understandable when a person is far away from home and out of necessity has to live in a hotel. But to squander the gift that Allah Ta‘ala has given merely to sleep on a hotel bed used by all and sundry is difficult to understand (there is little else that is generally done in a hotel which is permissible in deen).

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: “Let your house be
sufficient for you.” (Tirmizi #2406) It is indeed a calamity if a person cannot get comfort and relaxation in his home and has to go about looking for it in a hotel bed. There are many people who live in the open without a shelter above their heads. This money should rather be used to provide a roof for them.

MUSIC CONCERTS

Having lost the values of Imaan, many Muslims attend the evil musical shows and other gatherings where music is played. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said that in the latter times (close to Qiyaamah) a group of people will be transformed into monkeys and swine. They would be people who believe, perform their salaah and fast. However they would have taken to musical instruments, dancing girls, drums, and liquor. They would one night engage in their amusement and wake up the next morning as monkeys and swine. (Ithaaful Kharatil Maharah #7548)

BEACHES

During the peak holiday times, most beaches are places of absolute fitnah where, besides other evils, nudity is the norm. No person who has concern for the modesty and morality of his family will venture close to any such place. The collective evil that takes place at one time in these places could draw the wrath of Allah Ta‘ala immediately. It is only His clemency if He does not send down a calamity upon such places.

Thus we should never sacrifice our deen, even when on ‘holiday’.

(Adapted from Hazrat Moulana Yunus Patel’s (rahimahullah) tarbiyat program

1.Parents need to understand that we can’t be too strict on the children during the holidays. Some freedom should be given to them. However it shouldn’t be such that we give so much freedom, that we allow them to go to discos, rave clubs and cinemas. Some parents put the TV on in the house, putting the suitable cartoon for the child. And the child spends hours in front of the television. The adverse effect of all of this will be experienced by the parents.

2.Adjust the times in our daily routine. Take out time for our children. Talk to them, joke with them and take them out to places to acquire halaal entertainment. But if we say: “No! Rather send them with their friends” etc. Then we should take lessons from around us. How much of correspondence we get where muslim girls are having abortions. Their parents don’t know anything about it.

3.The world outside is extremely vicious. It’s like someone going to Kruger National Park. If he steps out of the car, he will be devoured by a cheetah or lion. We can’t change the world due to our limitations. But we can change ourselves and the environment of our homes. No government stops us from performing salaah. No government forces us to watch TV, movies or to adorn the dress of the kuffar.

4.We as parents need to know what is on our children’s phones. Recently some boys were found watching haraam on their phones in the musjid.

5.I am not saying it is totally haraam to watch the waters of the ocean. But in these so called festive times we know what haraam takes place there. For those who want peace of mind and also want their children to grow up in a healthy environment, we shouldn’t go to these places. Look for good things that they will be occupied in. Take them out for some halaal entertainment. (where no laws of shariah are broken and the environment is conducive)

Sublime “Holiday Spots”

A man was on his way to a neighboring village when an angel suddenly appeared before him. ‘What takes you to this village?’ Enquired the angel. ‘To visit a brother whom I love for the sake of Allah,’ was the sincere reply. The angel questioned further, ‘do you have any other motive?’

The man replied ‘No’, upon which the angel exclaimed, ‘I am the messenger of Allah and I assure you that Allah loves you as you love your brother.’

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6495)

At the same time, another angel is deputed to proclaim the following message to him:

“You have done well, your foot steps have been profitable, and you have prepared an abode for yourself in Paradise.”

(Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2008)

Allah Ta’ala Himself announces:

“My love is incumbent for the one who loves, visits, or spends on others purely for my sake.”

(Musnad Ahmad, vol.5 pg.233)

Value and Demand

The reason for such abundant rewards could be understood in light of the business principle: Commodities are valued according to demand and availability.

The scarcer a product, the higher the demand and therefore the greater the returns.

The same concept is found in certain aspects of Shari’ah. Those deeds that are seemingly insignificant and seldom practiced generally yield a higher reward. People meet daily in the world for various motives, but the practice of loving/meeting someone purely for the sake of Allah is totally foreign to us.

Of the many disastrous ill effects of the present day society is the concept of self-centeredness, where each person cares for himself whilst remaining totally oblivious of the presence and needs of those around him.

Presently, there are many such un-noticed Muslim brothers and sisters that are secluded in old aged homes, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and orphanages etc, who await some kindhearted soul to lift their spirits by paying them a visit. Occasional visits to such places would do us more benefits than harm.

Visiting Allah

One who visits the sick is, so to say , visiting Allah Ta’ala. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Allah Ta’ala will say to man (on the day of Qiyamah), O my slave, I was sick and you refused to visit me. ’Man will exclaim, O Allah, how could that be possible whereas You are the Lord of the Worlds? ‘Allah will reply, A certain slave of mine was sick, had you visited him, you would have found Me by him” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 6501)

If the merit for visiting an ordinary Muslim is such, can one imagine the rewards for visiting those with whom one shares a special bond?

Imagine the honor of joining ties with Allah!

One who maintains family ties is promised the privilege of Almighty Allah joining ties with him, i.e. by means of showing His special mercy, etc. On the contrary, Allah Ta’ala severs ties with those who break family ties. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 7502)

The Wrong Alternative

Nowadays, people choose to spend their spare time frequenting places that are totally immoral and filled with vice and sin, like: the cinemas, casinos, shows, entertainment halls, beaches, parties etc.

The mere presence of a Muslim at such places in the company of immodest people is extremely detrimental to his Iman.

On the contrary, ask yourself the question:

when last did you visits your relatives, your local ‘Alim, an elder of the community, or any fellow Muslim brother purely for the pleasure of Allah?

Visiting the sick, the elderly, the needy, one’s relatives, neighbours or any other Muslim for the sake of Allah was a salient feature in the life of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam). He would even visit such non-muslims, like the jewish lad who was ill.

This had assisted in bonding the Ummah as well as its expansion.

Today too, especially during the present holiday season, we can achieve all that and more by implementing this important and neglected Sunnah of our beloved Master (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

Instead of emulating the rest of the world who celebrate the year-end with as much sin as possible, thereby drawing the wrath of our Creator upon mankind.

May Allah Ta’ala protect the Ummah from all fitnah.

THE PAGAN ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS

PAGAN ORIGINS OF CHRISTMAS
Christmas is the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, who is considered the Son of God, and the savior of all people. With the birth of Christ, Christianity essentially begins; thus, Christmas also celebrates the beginning of Christianity.
Though Christmas is normally celebrated on the 25th of December, strong evidence suggests that Jesus may have in fact been born in the spring. Though many Christians date Christ’s birth as the end of the “Before Christ” or BC era, most believe Christ’s birth can actually be dated to 4 BC. This is a bit ironic, since the Christian era is thought to begin with the birth of Christ, but actually begins later.
Some of the images inexorably tied with Christmas are things like shepherds in the snow, and the fierce cold of a winter night when Jesus was born. This is an unlikely scenario, though it is quite possible that the Jews participating in the census and taxation were extremely crowded in Bethlehem.
Sextus Julius Africanus, a third century Christian missionary, is believed to have first espoused the theory of Christ’s birth as December 25th. This worked well when the Romans later largely converted to Christianity because Christmas could be tied to pagan winter rituals, making it more palatable. Historical records suggest some forms of Christmas celebrations dating back to the early 4th century CE.
Some, however, argued that Christmas should not be celebrated as a feast date, because of the divine nature of Christ. This position is still held by some minority Christian groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Though most see Jolly Old England as the source for many modern Christmas traditions, England actually banned celebration of Christmas from 1647-1660 in an effort to free the holiday of what was viewed as its pagan trappings and the excess and corruption of the Roman Catholic Church. This, however, was not a popular decision. England reinstated Christmas as a celebratory holiday, though tensions still ran high between the Anglican and the Roman Catholic Church.
Charles Dickens must be mentioned as inspiring many of the traditions we now regularly practice as part of Christmas celebrations. His phenomenal classic The Christmas Carol published in 1843 changed Christmas to a moderate, family oriented holiday. This differed from past celebrations which often verged on the anti-Christian, and which involved pursuing hedonism with graceless abandon.
Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “A Visit from Saint Nicholas,” firmly established the Christmas/ Santa Claus connection. Actually many Christmas traditions are based in Germanic pagan rituals predating Christianity. Many consider Thor to be a frontrunner as an early Santa Claus figure, and the Christmas tree was once a sacrificial tree to the gods, hung brightly with dead animals.
The above narrative is from a Christian website regarding the history of Christmas. As one can see even today’s Christians acknowledge the pagan origins of there holiday. Let’s take a further look at some of the so called Christmas traditions:
The Source of Holly Wreaths, Yule Logs and Mistletoe
The Encyclopedia Americana states, “The holly, the mistletoe, the Yule log…are relics of pre-Christian time.” In other words, paganism! The Yule log was commonly used in a rite of Teutonic nature worship.
Frederick Haskin further states, “The use of Christmas wreaths is believed by authorities to be traceable to the pagan customs of decorating buildings and places of worship at the feast which took place at the same time as Christmas.”
The Encyclopedia Britannica, under “Celastrales,” exposes the origin of the holly wreath: “European pagans brought holly sprays into their homes, offering them to the fairy people of the forests as refuge from the harsh winter weather. During the Saturnalia, the Roman winter festival, branches of holly were exchanged as tokens of friendship. The earliest Roman Christians apparently used holly as a decoration at the Christmas season.”
Christmas is incomplete to many unless it involves “kissing under the mistletoe.” This pagan custom was natural on a night that involved much revelry done in the spirit of drunken orgies. Just like today, this “kissing” usually occurred at the beginning of any modern Saturnalia/Christmas celebration. I will never forget having to always kiss my friends’ mothers upon entering each of their houses every Christmas. It was the first thing that we did. I hated it—but it was something I “had to do”! Mistletoe was considered to have special powers of healing for those who “reveled” under it.
The Encyclopedia Britannica, under “Santalales,” states, “The European mistletoe is thought to have had special ritual significance in Druidical ceremonies and lives in folklore today, its special status as the Christmas mistletoe having come from Anglo-Saxon times.” Mistletoe is a parasite that lives on oak trees. (Recall that the Druids worshipped in oak tree groves.) The ancient Celtics (associated with the Druids) used to give mistletoe as an herbal remedy to barren animals to make them fertile. It is still referred to as “all healer” in Celtic.
Like mistletoe, holly berries were also thought to be sacred to the sun god. The original “sun log” came to be called the yule log. “Yule” simply means “wheel,” which has long been a pagan representation of the sun. No wonder people today commonly speak of the “sacred yule-tide season.”
The Origin of the Christmas Tree
No booklet about Christmas is complete without some explanation of the “Christmas tree.” We have touched on it without directly focusing on it. The modern Christmas tree originated in Germany. But the Germans got it from the Romans, who got it from the Babylonians and the Egyptians.
The following demonstrates what the Babylonians believe about the origin of the Christmas tree: “An old Babylonish fable told of an evergreen tree which sprang out of a dead tree stump. The old stump symbolized the dead Nimrod, the new evergreen tree symbolized that Nimrod had come to life again in Tammuz! Among the Druids the oak was sacred, among the Egyptians it was the palm, and in Rome it was the fir, which was decorated with red berries during the Saturnalia!” (Walsh, Curiosities of Popular Customs, p. 242).
Frederick J. Haskin’s Answers to Questions states, “The Christmas tree is from Egypt, and its origin dates from a period long anterior to the Christmas Era.” Did you know this—that the Christmas tree long preceded Christianity?
Most aspects of Christmas are not referred to in the Bible. Of course, the reason is that they are not from God—they are not part of the way He wants people to worship Him. The Christmas tree, however, is directly mentioned in the Bible! Turn to Jeremiah 10:2-5, “Thus says the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen…For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.”
This plain description of the modern Christmas tree is clear. God directly refers to it as “the way of the heathen.” Just as directly, He commands His people to “learn not the way of the heathen,” calling these customs “vain.”
What About the Santa Myth?
According to Langer’s Encyclopedia of World History, (article “Santa”), “Santa” was a common name for Nimrod throughout Asia Minor. This was also the same fire god who came down the chimneys of the ancient pagans and the same fire god to whom infants were burned and eaten in human sacrifice among those who were once God’s people.
Today Santa Claus comes from “Saint Nicholas.” Washington Irving, in 1809, is responsible for remaking the original old, stern bishop of this same name into the new “jolly St. Nick” in his Knickerbocker History of New York. (Most of the rest of America’s Christmas traditions are even more recent than this.) “Old Nick” has long been recognized as a term for the devil.
In Revelation 2:6 and 15, we read about a “doctrine of the Nicolaitanes,” which Christ twice tells His Church “[He] hates.” Let’s analyze the word Nicolaitane. It means “follower of Nicholas.” Nikos means “conqueror, destroyer.” Laos means, “People.” Nicolaitanes, then, are people who follow the conqueror or destroyer—Nimrod.
Is It Scriptural to Exchange Gifts?
Merchants regularly report that over 60% of their annual retail sales occur during the Christmas shopping season. This represents a tremendous amount of gift buying. Most today believe that gift-giving comes from the Bible example of the “three wise men” (the Bible gives no number) presenting gifts to Christ. Is this true? Where did exchanging gifts come from, and what does God’s Word say about it?
The Bibliotheca Sacra states, “The interchange of presents between friends is a like characteristic of Christmas and the Saturnalia, and must have been adopted by Christians from the pagans, as the admonition of Tertullian plainly shows” (Vol. 12, pp. 153-155).
Like every other aspect of Christmas, the shocking truth is that even this supposed Christian custom does not come from the Bible. It is an irony that people love to believe they are following the custom of the wise men giving to Christ, when actually they are giving almost exclusively to each other! The Bible actually teaches that Christians should not keep birthdays. Numerous scriptures make this principle clear.
May Allah keep protect us from following the ways of the kuffaar and give us the strength to stay firm on His Deen. Ameen!
