Magic and Superstition in Orthodox Judaism

The following is a guest post by Ibrahim Qasim from the “Proving Islam” Youtube Channel.

Magic and superstition are two forms of shirk that Orthodox Judaism has fallen into.

While Deuteronomy 18 explicitly forbids the two, we find plenty of magic and superstition within the Talmud itself.

Sorcery

To start with, we can take a look at Sanhedrin 68a in the Babylonian Talmud which mentions a story of Rabbi Eliezer filling a field with cucumbers through the use of sorcery. The passage then goes on to ask how it is possible that Eliezer performed magic while the Torah forbids it.

It answers the question by explaining that it is actually permissible to learn and perform sorcery in order to understand it.

The problem with this explanation is that sorcery is idolatry. The Talmud is essentially saying that it is permissible to commit shirk in order to better understand it!

Just imagine I worshiped an idol in order to understand Hindus better. See the problem?

Working With Jinns

The way magic works as explained to us by the Qur’an and Sunnah is through contact with the jinn.

This is important to keep in mind as we take a look at another text, Sanhedrin 101a:8 in the Babylonian Talmud, which says:

“The Sages taught demons of oil and demons of eggs, it is permitted to consult them”.

There are two rabbinic explanations for what this means:

A) that it is speaking of demons who have been consulted by means of oil and eggs;[1] and

B) that it is speaking of consulting the demons of oil and eggs themselves.[2]

Regardless of which of the two interpretations one favors, the essence of the passage is that there are demons which the Talmud deems permissible to consult.[3]

Allah says in Qur’an 6:100:

Yet they associate the jinn with Allah even though He created them, and they falsely attribute to Him sons and daughters out of ignorance. Glorified and Exalted is He above what they claim!

Furthermore, Allah says about the Jews in Qur’an 2:102:

And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt. But they [i.e., the two angels] do not teach anyone unless they say, “We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic].” And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah. And they [i.e., people] learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But they [i.e., the Children of Israel] certainly knew that whoever purchased it [i.e., magic] would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew”

Astrology

Again, there is a plethora of superstition found within the Talmud.

We shall mention two specific examples from astrology here.

Firstly, in the Babylonian TalmudShabbat 156a:11, it claims that the positions of the stars determine a person’s nature. Among other things it claims:[4]

“One who was born under the influence of Venus will be a rich and promiscuous person”.

and:

“One who was born under the influence of Mercury will be an enlightened and expert man”.

and:

“One who was born under the influence of Mars will be one who spills blood”.

The second example I intend to present is in Sukkah 29a:13 from the Babylonian Talmud.

It reports superstitions regarding eclipses.

For example, it says:

The Sages taught that on account of four matters the sun is eclipsed: On account of a president of the court who dies and is not eulogized appropriately, and the eclipse is a type of eulogy by Heaven; on account of a betrothed young woman who screamed in the city that she was being raped and there was no one to rescue her; on account of homosexuality; and on account of two brothers whose blood was spilled as one.

Even the phrase Mazal Tov you may have heard Jews use to congratulate each other is relevant here. Mazal means destiny, but can also mean constellation.[5] This shows just how deeply Judiasm has fallen into astrology.

A hadith reported in Sahih al-Bukhari 3201 mentions:

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم (said, “The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of someone’s death or life (i.e. birth), but they are two signs amongst the Signs of Allah. So, if you see them (i.e. eclipse) offer the (eclipse) prayer.

Allah said in Qur’an 4:51-52:

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture, who believe in jibt [superstition] and ṭāghūt [false objects of worship] and say about the disbelievers, “These are better guided than the believers as to the way”? Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed; and he whom Allah curses – never will you find for him a helper”

Notes

[1] See the translation of this passage on sefaria.org (which is the William Davidson Talmud).

[2] See footnote 17 on Sanhedrin 101a from the Soncino Babylonian Talmud Book V Folios 93a-113b “Sanhedrin Translated In English With Notes” by Jacob Shachter (chapters I – VI) & H. Freedman (chapters VII – XI). Edited by Rabbi I. Epstein. The footnote explains: “Every plant in the vegetable kingdom was believed to have its own presiding genius, which could be provoked by incantations.”

[3] One may point out that the passage continues by saying these demons deceive people and hence it is futile to consult them, but this doesn’t change the fact that the shirk has been made permissible in the first place. Imagine someone deemed it permissible to pray to idols but just said there’s no benefit in it so there’s no point in praying to them. This is still highly problematic because it is still allowing people to pray to idols which should be forbidden in the first place.

GATHERINGS OF THE FRIENDS

ZINA GATHERINGS OF THE FRIENDS OF IBLEES

A justifiably exasperated Sister from Durban, correctly lamenting about a group of Friends of Iblees operating in Durban with their promotion of Zina in various guises, says:

“I wrote the following message for ulema in Durban, will email Jamiat KZN. Al Ansaar is a well known radio station, organization that allows such gatherings. I am not happy about it. Im not happy about the fact that it seems okay to make Islam modern, and to give promiscuity an ‘islamic’ cover.

Message for the Ulama

“I have a question regarding a very concerned matter.

It has been brought to my attention that gatherings which are not in accordance to Shariah are taking place. A group called FRIENDS has been active for the past 6 years. The initial purpose and intention of this group was to uplift women, give them support, help guide them to the right path, especially divorced women and widows. But now it has become a gathering for the rich. Women who are supposed to be in purdah are exposed to men in these gatherings. There are no precautions taken into consideration. The laws of shariah are being blatantly flouted. There are women who even do match making against the laws of Shariah. They have groups with men and allow the women to chat.

The members who wish to join these gatherings have to pay towards the expenses of these gatherings. It’s not voluntary. It’s like a high tea-gathering for the elite and not for the poor community.

Are such gatherings allowed by the Shariah?

As a woman I know there is a limit to what I can do and cannot. When such gatherings are becoming so popular. Why are the ulema not stepping in and stopping it? A woman like me can create awareness about it being wrong but these women who are involved in initiating such evil gatherings will not stop unless the ulema tell them this is not allowed. This cannot happen. You are breaking the law of shariah.

There are so many similar incidents occurring and some sisters have reached out to me saying they asked the ulema for help, and nothing was done.

They went to the Jamiat and nothing was done. So this gives the people who are modernizing Islam more advantage because the men are not speaking up.

I feel it needs to be spoken about in the Musjids so that men can tell their wives. It needs to be spoken about in every community.

In this time of fitna and fasad, we have to start standing up against these gatherings because these women are allowing dunya’s glamor to sweep them off their feet.

Below is images of an invitation the group “FRIENDS” created . It will be held at Al Ansaar coffee shop and hall. This week. I urge you to please look into this and do something about it.

This same group, FRIENDS, is having another gathering at a bed and breakfast near the Musjid. They collaborate with Ilmsa.” (End of the Sister’s letter)

COMMENT OF THE SHARIAH

Yes, indeed this stercoraceous group of copro individuals is correctly described as ‘FRIENDS”. They are the FRIENDS of Shaitaan – the Chief Iblees. In fact they could be correctly designated as being the illegitimate progeny of Iblees. Shaitaan does have legitimate children who are devils of his ilk. But, his illegitimate progeny is made up of copro humans whom he fans out into the world as his primary agents to execute his multifarious schemes and conspiracies of fitnah and fasaad. Zaani-aat of the category of this group, not ordinary prostitutes plying their immoral trade, and Zanaadaqah who misinterpret the Qur’aan and Ahaadith to fabricate meanings as cover for their kufr and nifaaq, are among the illegitimate progeny of Iblees.

We find ourselves in this era which is the initial phase of the Age of Dajjaal. In this era of Dajjaaliyat most of the minor signs of Qiyaamah are being enacted in preparation for the final stage when Dajjaal himself will emerge as predicted by Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

While we lament and Islamically rant against all agents of Dajjaal and Iblees, we should not be surprised nor weaken our resolve regarding the vital and sacred obligation of Amr Bil Ma’roof Nahyi Anil Munkar which must be perpetuated until the very last regardless of who accepts or rejects. The Ulama should not abandon Amr Bil Ma’roof because of the wide-scale, intensive and extensive prevalence of shaitaani fitnah and fasaad. The process of fitnah is incremental. It will not decrease. We are heading for Qiyaamah, and the dunya has to be destroyed. Our objective is not to provide hidaayat (guidance). Hidaayat is the prerogative exclusively of Allah Azza Wa Jal. Confirming this reality, the Qur’aan Majeed states:

“Verily, you (O Muhammad!) cannot guide whom you love. But Allah guides whomever He wills, and He knows best who are to be guided.”

This ‘Friends’ group as described by the Sister and as their pictures and write-ups further elaborate, is undoubtedly a shaitaani ZINA group of shayaateenul ins (human devils) which Iblees has harnessed to lure stupid women into his snare of immorality, vice and Zina. All the women who are taking a leading role in the implementation of the Zina Plot of Shaitaan are confirmed zaani-aat who are being handled and mishandled by the zaani menfolk. The evil men in whose hands Shaitaan has placed the reins of this extremely jahannami insidious plot of zina has most cunningly trapped the prostitutes into the plot of Iblees.

These zaani-aat are satanically camouflaged as self-esteem coaches, psychiatrists, reflexocologists, coprocologists, najaasatocologists, sataniocologists, dajjaalocologists, etc., etc. Understand well, that all ‘psychiatrists’ and ‘counsellors’ are agents of Iblees. Whatever they dole out as ‘advice’ and ‘therapy’ are satanic ‘sciences’ inspired by Iblees. Only such ignorant Muslims whose Imaan dwells in the doldrums of moral corruption, who are bereft of any Yaqeen in Allah Ta’ala, visit such she and he-devils for advice. These villains who are qualified in the satanic ‘science’ of psychiatry and the like are in the same category as fortune-tellers and satanic astrologers. Your Imaan dangles by a thread when you visit these shaitaani rubbishes, and your Imaan says ‘goodbye’ to you after you emerge with confidence from these agents of Iblees.

The Sister is justified for her extremely mild criticism of the Durban Ulama for their silence. She mentions that this ‘Friends’ group of shaitaani zaani-aat has been inexistence in Durban since the past six years. It was therefore necessary for the Ulama to have castigated and excoriated this haraam, zina group operated by the Illegitimate Daughters of Iblees. The silence of the Ulama is a primary cause for sin and vice becoming indurate and embedded in the community.

While most Muslims in this age are absolutely jaahil, corrupt and evil, numerous among them are sincere and genuinely astray. Amr Bil Ma’roof will benefit such ignoramuses. As for the zaani-aat who are executing the plot of Iblees and who are operating under the appellation, ‘Friends’, there is no hope of reformation for them. They are not like ordinary prostitutes who are in the business only for money. While there is always hope for the reformation of commercial prostitutes, there is no hope whatsoever for such ZAANI-AAT who are the agents of Iblees – whose function it is to entrap other stupid women who have the tendencies of prostitutes.

The Qur’aan Majeed negates hope of reformation for these kind of copro-hybrid human-devils. In regard to the progeny of Shaitaan, Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan Majeed:

“We have created numerous humans and jinn (specifically) as fuel for Jahannam.”

The Qur’aan describing the fodder of Hell-Fire variously epithelizes them as “Wuqooun Naar and Hasabu Jahannam.

The shameless intermingling of the sexes, the satanic match-making, the shaitaani glamour of tea parties, and the very satanic attitudes associated with this shaitaani group of copro individuals are some of the factors which even stupid Muslims can understand why this group is HARAAM and why their shaitaani functions are HARAAM.

“O People of Imaan! Save yourselves and your familes from the Fire… (Qur’aan)

Do not fall into the shaitaani trap of this shaitaani “Friends’ group consisting of human devils.

Do we say Bismillah when pouring boiling water in the sink or floor?

Q. Ibn Baaz the late grand mufti of KSA (Rahimahullah) was asked:  “Do we say Bismillah when pouring boiling water in the sink or floor?”  He replied: “Yes it’s very necessary to say Bismillah when about to pour a hot water in the sink because there are always Jinns in these areas too”. And Shaikh added:  “I happened to be present at a home where ruqya was taking place, and the Shaikh asked the Jinn: “Why are you disturbing this innocent man?” The jinn replied:  “He poured a hot water on my little children and killed one.”
The Shaikh replied: “But you know he didn’t see, because we can’t visibly see you.” The jinn said: “Why didn’t he mention Allah’s name “Bismillah? The child would have been aware and would have moved.”
This clearly means, whenever we mention the name of Allah it serves like a signal, it make them aware and they will move away.  Make sure you always say “Bismillah” entering your room, putting on your clothes, wearing your shoes, pouring boiled water in sinks or gutters, or even on the floor.”
(End of Ibn Baaz’s narrative)
Please advice if this is correct.
A. It is correct to recite ‘Bismillaah’ when commencing any activity, even when pouring water or boiling water into the sink or onto the floor. While it is possible for jinn to have been present where the Shaikh was doing Ruqyah to exorcise the jinn, it does not follow that there are jinn at all times in the sink. Nevertheless, it is necessary to recite Bismillaah whenever commencing any lawful act.

FROM THE MAJLIS VOLUME 26 NUMBER 02

PICTURES AND THE ANGELS OF MERCY

The following is a brief discussion about pictures on passports, money, school books etc. and how this may or may not affect the angels of mercy from entering one’s house. this answer was given by maulana a.s. desai. h.a.

As far as passport, identity document and other similar necessary documents are concerned, it will not be sinful to have one’s photo taken for these purposes since one has no choice. With regard to the Angels of Rahmat entering houses in which the pictures are concealed, we cannot say with certitude if they will enter homes where the pictures are hidden, not displayed. The malaaikah have a natural aversion for pictures of animate objects, just as we have a natural aversion for a bad odor. If a cat excretes in a hidden corner under the bed where no one can see the mess, the inmates of the house will soon perceive the terrible stench, search for it and clean up the place. In spite of it having been hidden from our sight, our sense of smell detected its presence. The malaaikah walk through solid objects like walls. Physical and solid objects are not a barrier for them. Covering up pictures, does hide them from our sight, not from the malaaikah. It is therefore, our opinion that even if we conceal pictures and even if the books in which the pictures are, are closed, these can prevent entry in to the home of the malaaikah of rahmat. My practice when reading such books is to affix a sticker over the whole head as I go along reading.

The only consolation we can think of is that Allah Ta’ala is Merciful. He will not deprive us of the companionship of the Angels of Mercy because of something which is beyond our control. Passport pictures and the like are beyond our control. Ugly pictures of fussaaq and kuffaar human faces are on all the paper money in our pockets. But we have no alternative other than to carry such evil pictures with us. We therefore hope that Allah Ta’ala Who is the Creator of the Malaaikah will create a method which will make it impossible for the Angels to detect the photos which we hide and which we detest. We believe that as long as we abhor these pictures and exercise care and display our aversion, Allah Ta’ala will not deprive us of the barakat of the Malaaikah of Rahmat.

It has become the practice of this sinful bandah when counting money, never to keep the picture on top or facing me. I turn the notes around if there is a picture only on one side, then count the money so that my soul does not suffer the mental torture of having to stare at something which Allah Ta’ala and His Malaaikah abhor.

Regarding pictures which can be easily destroyed such as the pictures on soap wrappers or on any packets, etc. in which food and other items are enclosed, it is necessary to immediately open up these items and discard the wrappers. A variety of cheap plastic containers and bottles, etc. is available for storing these items.

Regarding the foam mattress with pictures, do understand that your baby is more precious than the bed. It comes in the hadith that shaitaan causes distress to babies. If he happens to be around, he interferes with babies. Therefore, do not take chances with your baby. Covering up the pictures will not suffice. Remove the cover and sew a clean one on to it. This is the safest.

The chemical sulphur and anything having an offensive or pungent odor disturbs and chases away the Angels. I suggest that when lighting a candle, light it in a remote place of the home, outside the bedrooms. Anyhow, the odor of the match will soon disappear. Gas stoves and lighters too pose a problem because even the odor of gas is offensive to Malaaikah. But there is no option. Allah Ta’ala is merciful. Try to avoid such things without imposing too much inconvenience on yourself and your wife. Don’t undertake something which is too difficult to sustain. While pictures are haram, lighting a candle with a match is not haram.

THE DEVIL’S EYE

THE DEVIL’S EYE

A Sister whom Allah Ta’ala has saved by extricating her from the shaitaani clutches and traps of the sorcerers conducting ‘therapies’ under Deeni guise such as Body Talk, Aafiyah and the like, writes:

THE PINEAL GLAND & THE THIRD EYE.

When the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency of the U.S.A.) did a study of cults and secret societies they found that ONE THING common among these cults and secret societies from Kabbalah to Hermeticism, Free Masonry to Hellenism and even the deviated sufi cults, is their obsession with activating the Pineal Gland and Opening the third eye.

The third eye (also called the mind’s eye) is a mystical and esoteric concept of a speculative invisible eye, usually depicted as located on the forehead, which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. (Wikipedia)

So HOW does one do this?

I am listing these methods because many of them are trending and being practiced my Muslims. Often promoted by coaches and those in the pop psychology and modern spirituality industry.

  • yoga
  • hypnosis
  • meditation
  • guided meditation
  • breath work/ breathing with intention
  • opening one’s Chakras
  • spinning or shaking

……………………. (End of extracts from her letter)

OUR COMMENT

Iblees has harnessed these ‘therapists’ who are sorcerers and witches, into his conspiracy of converting people, especially Muslims, into Satanists. The immediate villainous consequence of these Body Talk/Aafiyah shaitaaniyat is enmity between husband and wife. The marriage completely breaks down. The Qur’aan Majeed, referring to this speciality of the Satanist sorcerers and witches, says:

“They learnt from the two (Haarut and Maarut) that which caused dissension between a man and his wife………. They learnt only that (i.e. (satanism) which harmed them, and did not benefit them.” (Al-Baqarah, Aayat 103)

Numerous Muslim women have become entrapped by Iblees into the sorcery cults practiced by the sorcerers and witches posing as ‘therapists’. We are aware of many cases of marriages breaking down as a direct consequence of wives having become ensnared in the devil’s tentacles via the agents of Iblees, the cultist ‘therapists’.

After being subjected to satanic brain washing and heart washing, the woman develops an intense hatred for her husband. This hatred is extended to other members of the family who are considered by the trapped woman to be deviates.

Muslims, especially women who have become easy prey for the villainous ‘therapists’, should beware. Do not approach near to these human devils. You will lose your Imaan and your family. Both your dunya and Aakhirah will be ruined by entanglement with the cults of Iblees.

Cults such as Body Talk and Aafiyah are HARAAM. These cults are traps of Iblees, so BEWARE!

Powerful Protection

Buraidah (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) reports: “I heard that Mu‘aaz bin Jabal (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) had captured a Jinn during the lifetime of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam). I thus went to Mu‘aaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) and asked him regarding this incident. Mu‘aaz (radhiyallahu ‘anhu) narrated the following to me:

“Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) had entrusted the dates of sadaqah to me for safekeeping. Thus, I placed these dates in one of my rooms. However, I would daily find that the dates had decreased. So I went to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and complained to him of the dates decreasing, to which Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, ‘It is the work of a Shaitaan. Wait for him in ambush.’

I waited in ambush for this Shaitaan, and after a short portion of the night had elapsed, he appeared in the form of an elephant. When he reached the door, he changed his form and entered through a crack in the door. He then approached the dates and began to swallow them. I firstly checked that my clothing was tightly secured and then confronted and apprehended him saying, ‘I testify that there is no deity besides Allah and that Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is His servant and messenger! O enemy of Allah! You have rushed to take the dates of sadaqah whereas the poor are more deserving of it than you! I am definitely going to take you to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), and he will disgrace you!’ When he heard this, he began to plead with me and promised me that he would not return (and I thus released him).

The following morning, I went to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) who asked me, ‘What happened to the one you captured?’ I replied, ‘He promised me that he would not return,’ Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) said, ‘He will return, so wait for him in ambush.’

I waited for him on the second night and again captured him. He again pleaded and promised that he would not return, and so I again released him. In the morning, I proceeded to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) to inform him of what had transpired. However, before I could reach Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), I heard someone calling out, ‘Where is Mu‘aaz?’ When I reached Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he asked me, ‘What happened to your prisoner?’ I told Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) what had happened, to which he replied, ‘He will return, so wait for him in ambush.’

I waited for him for a third night. On this occasion, when I apprehended him, I addressed him saying, ‘O enemy of Allah! You have already promised me twice that you will not return! I will now definitely take you to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) and he will disgrace you!’ The Shaitaan pleaded, ‘I am a Shaitaan who has dependents and I have come from Naseebeen! If I was able to find some food closer to Naseebeen, I would not have come to you! We used to live in this city of yours (Madeenah Munawwarah). However, after your Nabi (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) was deputed, there were two verses of your Quraan that were revealed, and these two verses chased us away. We thus went to Naseebeen. If these two verses are recited in any home, no Shaitaaan will enter that home for three days. If you release me, I will teach you these two verses.’ I agreed to release him, after which he said, ‘The two verses are Aayatul Kursi and the concluding verses of Surah Baqarah, commencing from ‘Aamanar Rasulu’ until the end of the surah.’

The following morning, I set out to inform Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) of what had occurred, when I heard someone announce, ‘Where is Mu‘aaz bin Jabal?’ When I entered into the presence of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), he enquired, ‘What happened to your captive?’ I replied, ‘He promised me that he would not return,’ and I also told Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) of the two verses that he had taught me. When he heard this, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) remarked, ‘The wretch has spoken the truth, whereas he is normally a liar.’

I would thereafter recite these verses on the dates of sadaqah and would no longer find any decrease in their quantity.” (Tabraani – Majma‘uz Zawaa’id #10920 & Fathul Baari vol. 4, pgs. 614 & 615)

Lessons:

  1. The Quraan Majeed is a powerful means of protection from Shaitaan, black magic, etc. Hence, regularly reciting the Quraan Majeed within the home is a very effective means of protecting the home from evil forces. Furthermore, there are certain verses in the Quraan Majeed that are especially powerful in gaining protection. Most of these verses have been gathered in a compilation known as the ‘Manzil’ which can be recited daily or more frequently if required. Click ‘here’ to download the Manzil.
  2. When reciting the verses of protection and du‘aas of protection, it is important for a person to have strong ‘yaqeen’ (conviction and faith) in the power of these verses and their effectiveness. Hence, they should be read with presence of mind and not merely read in an absent-minded manner, as if one is fulfilling a routine.
  3. The Shayaateen and Jinn are notorious liars, as explained by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) himself. Hence, the information given by Jinn, even if it be through the medium of an ‘aamil, cannot be trusted and relied on – especially if this information accuses any person of being responsible for the black magic, etc. Sadly, people often accept this information and, as a result, commit the major sin of breaking family ties and accusing people of black magic, whereas they have no proof at all.
