“Creeping” Celebrity Culture in Today’s Islam

Asslamo Allaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh,

Islam means “Submission to the will of Allah (SWT)” and a Muslims is the one “who submits to the will of Allah (SWT)” and submission absolute humility from the servant.

Modern celebrity culture on the other hand requires abstinence from humility and living a lifestyle larger than life and to be an extrovert and ensuring that you grab the maximum column width and media limelight. Success in show business depends on hogging the limelight!

Unfortunately in our times the two concepts are violently colliding to give birth to something called “Celebrity culture in Islam” and this can manifest itself in Ex-celebrities embracing Islam or Ex-celebrities renouncing their lifestyle and coming onto Sunnah (Masha’Allah) or Ulamah (or laymen) proficient in giving Bayans which move the masses and literally “Rock the House”. Some of those giving the talks have nice trimmed beards, latest suits and nicely toned physiques to go with their “magical Khutbahs and talks”. The issue has become so serious that on certain Islamic blogs you can read comments from Sisters asking blatantly, “Is the brother married or is he looking for a 2nd wife?”

There are incidents where Ulamah & Mashaykh have been approached by Sisters stating that they can’t live without them and would like for them to their second (or even third) wives and many have in turn married these Sisters. There are examples of such love marriages in our communities.

Last year when our dear and beloved Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) came to UK a community in UK placed huge billboards with welcome signs and if anyone has ever met Shaykh (Mufti) Taqi Usmani (HA) in real life you will know that Hazrat is very humble (like his father) and doesn’t like publicity at all and all of this certainly was neither discussed with Hazrat nor done with his permission!

There are videos on youtube with Revert Sisters (some with unacceptable Hijabs) discussing their story about coming to Islam and the videos have thousands of hits!

There are Ulamah who demand lodging in the best of accommodations and astronomical amounts of money to speak at conventions & Islamic conferences because they know that they are “in demand”.

Then there are pictures of “Amir Khan” the famous FAASIQ Bollywood star involved in Fisq and in a HARAM relationship with a Hindu woman flanked by a well known personality from the Ulamah during Hajj.

Recently (2012) an ex-celebrity by the name of Junaid Jamshaid sang his famous hit song “Dil Dil Pakistan” accompanied by guitar in front of a packed crowd in an American Islamic convention and many Tableeghees (& Deobandees) are astonished and disappointed by the actions of Brother Junaid Jamshaid whom they themselves placed on a pedestal as the ultimate “Taubah Boy”.

All of the above is in direct contradiction to the lifestyle of Sahaba (RA) who absolutely shunned publicity and limelight and went out of their way to hide themselves. I am not doubting the sincerity of many of these “Muslim celebrities” but why do normal Muslim brothers and sisters follow their every move? Why do they pay top money to attend these “glamorous” Islamic talks and “Nasheed concerts” ? Why do we search for the “Taubah for N*” the famous stage actor and dancer who has now donned Hijab?

Why do we need the Taubah of Ex-celebrities to come to Sunnah? Are the commandments of Allah (SWT) & his beloved Sayyidina Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) not enough for us? Why do we admire the pictures of a clean shaven Faasiq like “Amir Khan” with a “Maulana”? Why do we appreciate the presence of a well known Deobandi Maulana with Bollywood stars on live TV interviews?

I mean seriously, is there a part of us which still hankers after the “celebrity culture”? Be honest with yourself.

When someone makes Taubah we should make dua for Allah (SWT) to give them Istiqamaa upon the Sunnah.

When a Faasiq (celebrity) with a Muslim name appears on the media we should clearly highlight that he/she may have a Muslim name but DOES NOT represent Islam or Muslims.

When a Faasiq (celebrity) with a Muslim name appears on the media alongside a Maulana or has his/her pictures taken with Ulamah we should clearly stay away from propagating these images and interviews.

In our times many Ulamah have chosen to take part in these practices and since they are Ulamah they know know their reason best so without being confrontational or abusive or hurtful we should save ourselves from falling into this Fitnah and make dua for the Ummah of Sayyidina Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam).

Before attending Islamic talks and programs we should ask ourselves the critical question, “Is this talk or program CRITICAL for my Islah? or am I attending or listening because of a nice talk, simply because I need to occupy my time with something (instead of TV, movies & music)?”

May Allah (SWT) keep us steadfast upon the Deen as practiced from the Sahaba (RA) to those steadfast upon the Sunnah (to this day) and such noble souls will always exist until the day of judgement and may we get proximity to them to benefit from them (Ameen).
