As-Salamu ‘Alaikum

A lot of people of hawaa and scholars of duniya who seek to earn respect from kafirs say that the verse 5:51 only refers to war times and so on, because they are embarrassed of Islam in front of their kafir friends, which is inevitable because Islam in itself is that which is the opposite of kufr. They can’t bring themselves to tell their kafir friends that Islam makes it HARAM for Muslims to bear friendships and affinities with kafirs. 

This narration is present under the tafsiir’s of both Imam Abul Hasan Al-Khazen and Imam Fakhruddin Ar-Razi. Mind you, this narration is in relation to a dhimmi. The present day kafirs are only worse than dhimmis.
