Abnormally Long Beard is Foolishness – ﺍﻟﻠﺤﻴﺔ
Some Ghayr-Muqallideen La-Madhabiyyah, especially from the Sub-Continent grow unusually long beard they cite this hadith: “Cut the moustaches short and leave the beard.” in supporting their practice while completely disregarding the understanding of the Blessed Salaf on this Hadith which is the Masnoon practice of growing a fist-length beard and cutting off anything in excess. Having said this, let us look at the opinions of the Salaf regarding extremely abnormal and lengthy beards.
An extremely long beard, was considered a sign of negligence ( ﻏﻔﻠﺔ) and foolishness (ﺣﻤﻖ) by the Salaf.
For this reason, some scholars of Hadith would weaken/criticise (ﺟﺮﺡ) someone for having a massive beard.
Ad-Dhahabi narrates in ‘Mizan al-‘itidal’ (3/438):
ﻭﻗﻴﻞ ﻟﺨﺎﻟﺪ ﺍﻟﻄﺤﺎﻥ : ﺩﺧﻠﺖ ﺍﻟﻜﻮﻓﺔ ﻓﻠﻢ ﻟﻢ ﺗﻜﺘﺐ ﻋﻦ ﻣﺠﺎﻟﺪ ؟ ﻗﺎﻝ : ﻻﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻃﻮﻳﻞ ﺍﻟﻠﺤﻴﺔ
