After Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) rejected this proposal of the Quraish, they said to him, “Very well, if you do not accept our previous proposal, then we wish to make another proposal which we hope that you will accept.
“You are aware of the fact that your people are in poverty, and this city of Makkah is also in constraints. We are surrounded by mountains on all sides, without any trace of greenery and lushness. Thus, request your Lord, who has commissioned you as a prophet, to move the mountains of this city elsewhere so that this city becomes more spacious.
“Also, request Him to bring forth rivers in this city, like the cities of Syria and Iraq. Furthermore, resurrect our forefathers, particularly Qusayy bin Kilaab, so that we may enquire from them regarding your message and whether it is true or false. If our forefathers, upon being resurrected, say that you are truthful, then we will regard you to be the messenger of Allah Ta‘ala and we will believe in you.”
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) replied, “I was not sent as a prophet for this purpose. I have conveyed to you the divine message which Allah Ta‘ala sent me with. If you accept the message, it will be for your own good fortune, and if you fail to believe in it, I will exercise patience until Allah Ta‘ala decides between us.”
